After playing three matches in three days the week before, things returned to normal last week as the Lady Bulldog volleyball team played just two matches.

Douglas hosted Rio Rico on Tuesday, Oct 1, won 3-1 and then traveled to Walden Grove on Thursday, Oct. 3, where they lost by the same score of 3-1.

Against Rio Rico, the Lady Bulldogs lost the first set, 23-25 and then won the next three 25-18, 25-17 and 30-28.

Madison Green recorded 19 kills this match, Isabel Tanabe had 11 kills and 32 digs, Victoria Valenzuela also had 32 digs, Deyanira Victor had five kills and three blocks and Dianey Grijalva recorded 22 assists.

Against Walden Grove, Douglas lost the first set, 13-25, won the second, 25-21, and then dropped the next two, 20-25 and 22-25.

Tanabe had 23 digs, eight kills and four aces; Valenzuela 16 digs; Myrna Davilos had 11 digs, four aces and 12 assists; Green powered down 14 kills; Grijalva 14 assists and two digs.

“We started out real slow, but kicked it into gear second set,” Douglas’ coach Carlos Chavez said. “Unfortunately, we just did enough to hang around, but not enough to beat Walden Grove. Our receive game was not up to par.

Douglas, 4-6 overall, 2-2 in conference and 1-2 in region play has two home matches this week hosting Pueblo on Tuesday and Amphi on Thursday.

Freshmen

The Douglas freshmen volleyball team improved its record to 3-5 last week, following a win over Walden Grove, following a loss to Rio Rico.

Against Rio Rico, Douglas won the first set 25-18 and then lost the next two, 16-25, 13-15.

Valentina Moreno had 11 digs, two kills and two aces this match; Ashley Maldonado, five digs, six aces; Aleiram Garcia, three kills, seven digs, three aces; Ximena Martinez, two kills, five digs; Valeria Moreno, three kills, four digs; Angela Suarez, 13 digs, one ace; Brianna Elias, one kill, one dig; Isabella Smith, three digs and Debbie Nelson, two digs.

Against Walden Grove, the Lady Bulldogs were victorious in straight sets winning 25-23 and 25-19.

Valentina Moreno had three digs and an ace this match; Maldonado, seven digs, one ace; Montserrat Maxemin, one kill, two digs; Garcia had five kills, three digs, two aces; Bibainna Villalobos, two aces and two kills, Suarez, two kills, two digs, two aces; Nicole Galaz, two digs and Smith two digs.
