Volleyball season kicks off Monday, Aug. 5 for the Douglas Lady Bulldogs.
Douglas’ volleyball coach Carlos Chavez stated last week he will be holding tryouts that first week. Anyone thinking of trying out for the team needs to have all their paperwork turned into the athletic office before they can participate.
Chavez and his staff have been holding open gym in the Douglas High School gymnasium four days a week since Memorial Day and an average of 23-30 girls have been showing up to the volunteer workouts. The coach said he had 10-15 incoming freshmen showing up and credits the 21st Century after school volleyball programs at Paul Huber and Ray Borane Middle School for the freshmen participation numbers.
The Lady Bulldogs will scrimmage Tombstone Friday, Aug. 15 at Tombstone. The season opener is Sept. 5 at Buena. The home opener will be Thursday, Sept. 12 against Catalina.
Douglas will host the Second Annual Bulldog Volleyball Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21. Teams playing in the tournament have yet to be announced.
The Lady Bulldogs finished fourth in the Gila Region last year posting a 6-12 overall record, a 5-6 conference record and a 5-5 conference mark. Amphi won the region followed by Pueblo, Walden Grove and then Douglas.
