A 90-minute weather delay was not enough to keep Douglas' 8-10-year-old All-Stars from knocking off the Nogales All-Stars 6-4 Thursday in the District 8 tournament which is being played this week at the 15th Street Little League field.
With the win, Douglas will now face Sierra Vista Saturday at 5 p.m. in the tournament semifinals. Friday's elimination games have Bisbee vs. San Pedro at 5 p.m. followed by Willcox vs. Nogales at 7:30 p.m. The two winners of Friday's game will meet Saturday at 7:30 in another elimination game.
Nogales jumped on Douglas scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning Thursday.
In the top of the fourth, Douglas rallied for five runs taking a 5-2 lead. Nogales scored twice in the bottom of the fifth pulling within one at 5-4.
With a storm that was in the area threatening, Douglas tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth taking a 6-4 lead before play was suspended with two outs.
Lightning in the area put the game into what would amount to a 90-minute weather delay. When play finally did resume at 8:30 p.m. Douglas was able to hang on for the win.
Stats for the Douglas All-Stars had starting pitcher Gustavo Hurtado throwing four and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs off four hits, while fanning six and walking three.
